List of Panel Topics

AM Workshops (10:00 to 11:15 AM)

The Leader Within You

People do not become leaders for glamour. Even though the impact of their actions is truly inspiring, most of them contribute to their own communities quietly. Look around, do you see them? Or, do you see one inside of you? Being a young Asian American female does not equate to being powerless or only ivy-league-based. You may be more courageous, confident, and effective as a leader than anyone else. Come listen to how our panelists got started and you will realize your potential.

When I Grow Up

In some Asian Cultures, there is an old game that people used to play on a baby’s first birthday. Parents and guests would scatter numerous objects around the baby and see what happens. While it was a game, it always taken very seriously: the first item the baby took in his hands would determine their future career and life. Sounds silly? It is not too different from feeling that you ought to determine your future steps by the time you enter or graduate from college. The real world is a learning ground in and of itself.  As you will realize from the panel, it is absolutely okay for us to have doubts about our original plans and change our minds, even after we grow up.

Making the Right Moves

Professional success does not come easily. We have to plan for the strategic moves every step along the way: work hard, learn more, negotiate well, invest intelligently, and build a solid nest. It is no secret that Asian American women are taught to be diligent, modest, and money-wise from a very young age, but what is the perfect combination of the three that will lead us to success in our careers? This panel aims to provide Asian American females with some tips on making wise decisions on professional conduct, work negotiations, and personal investments .

PM Workshops (2:15-3:30)

The Balancing Act

We often find ourselves struggling to balance many different responsibilities, whether they be at work or school.  In addition, we may associate with multiple identities such as daughter, sister, partner, spouse, or mother.  Many of us try to ensure a sense of balance professionally, personally, and socially, as we seek to lead a fulfilling life.  Speakers from various professional and personal life stages will address how this balancing act affects our overall development.

Pursuit of Happiness

As Asian-American women carry on their lives, the pressures and burdens with fulfilling responsibilities and obligations can exert various stresses on this population.  Additionally, a woman’s self-image can have a significant impact on her development.  Speakers will speak to the issues of various stresses that Asian-American women encounter in their lives, and how they can manage it and take care of themselves.

Fearless

Often times, the act of fearlessness can lead us to travel down the road less taken.  This is especially relevant when it comes to exploring non-traditional careers for our population.  How we tie in what we are passionate about with what we are skilled at can lead us to find happiness and fulfillment in whatever we do.  Speakers from a variety of careers considered “off the beaten path” will share their experiences and how they pursued this happiness in their lives.

ASPIRE

ASPIRE (Asian Sisters Participating in Reaching Excellence) is a Boston-based non-profit organization dedicated to Asian American girls and women in the area of career and leadership development. With a strong membership base of 500+ members nationwide and 150+ professional volunteers, we develop programs that engage, educate and empower Asian American high school, college, and professional women to become effective, lifelong leaders.

The Asian American (AA) community often faces stereotypes of being a “model minority”– an ethnic group that has already achieved success and needs little support. As a result, AA girls often lack mentors and role models. AA girls that struggle to fulfill the “model minority” myth are at severe risk for mental illness, challenged by the clash between American individualism and the Asian tradition of putting family and community first. ASPIRE aims to empower AA women through customized leadership training and career development, hands-on civic engagement in their communities and schools, and individual mentoring. Our goal is to improve their coping skills, self-confidence, mental and career outlook.
